A mezzanine, an artist studio and a living space

The clients behind this project, a couple of visual artists, wanted to outfit their Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie duplex with a mezzanine, an artists’ studio and a living space.

The mezzanine, housing a bedroom and reading room overlooking the rooftop gardens, maximizes living space and brings in generous amounts of sunshine. Set between the roof and the second floor, it divides the interior into public and private areas. Technical spaces below the mezzanine act as a transition between studio and kitchen.

The project’s signature is a mix of the simple and complex that pays off in the optimal use of every centimeter. Custom-made plywood furniture helps achieve it. The staircase, shower, kitchen, and wheeled storage modules, as well as the adjustable bookshelves are unified by this simple and affordable material. To facilitate clean-up and further the sense of unity, the floor is layered in epoxy.
